Custom Body Fuel is no longer in business! Please order Schmoylent at Super Body Fuel instead.

Schmoylent is my take on the official Soylent 1.0 formula. If you need a gluten-free version, try Schmoylent Clean.

It has the exact same macronutrient amounts in each daily serving, and is based on a mix of oat flour and rice protein just like Soylent. But instead of artificial vanillin, I’ve used rice protein with natural vanilla flavor, along with a tiny bit of stevia instead of sucralose for those who are sensitive to it (like me!). More recently, I’ve stopped using maltodextrin and now use rice flour instead. And it’s vegan and soy-free.

I ordered two weeks worth of Schmoylent vanilla. I had a shipping issue which Axcho quickly rectified (thanks!) I love good customer service.

I am very satisfied with Schmoylent, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the taste of Stevia. I will order the unsweetened variety next time and sweeten it myself with a banana and some honey.

I’ll make half a days worth to save some time in the day (breakfast/lunch), throw in a pureed banana and a couple tablespoons of honey. It tastes like a banana-nut muffin shake. I’m pretty into it. I might try some other fruit too.

The biggest selling point for me is the convenience.

This was my first trial of any of the Soylent DIY strains, I’ve been wanting to try the original for a while, but with the shipping issues I figured I’d give Schmoylent a try. Shipping was amazingly fast, instructions were quite clear. I’ve been through two days worth, over a period of 4 days, using it for breakfast and lunch, but cooking for dinner.

The taste isn’t that bad, but the oat flour keeps making me expect to chew, as I normally only get that flavor with oatmeal, the stevia, however has an aftertaste that just really doesn’t sit well for me. Adding dark cocoa powder makes it fantastic though. All in all I really like it, and will try making my own batch next. Thanks, Axcho!

I quite agree. Just wanted to focus on that point out of a longer post.

I love this stuff. Easily the best of all the various liquid foods I’ve tried. Cinnamon is godly. I look forward to drinking this stuff, and have been living off of it for a few weeks now. It’s given me some freedom from bad food habits I’ve built over my whole lifetime. The only reason I’d stop ordering this is if I decided to mix my own.

Axcho seems to be a nice guy. Schmoylent recipe is great!

The best of the bunch on this website, better than official Soylent. Tastes good, is a little thicker than official Soylent but I find that I prefer that anyway as it makes me feel fuller. I’ve been having this for weekday breakfasts for many weeks now and I’m not tired of it.

I bought my first week of the original blend (unsweetened) a few weeks ago planning on using this to help me lose weight. I’ve used it primarily to replace one meal a day (lunch) and it’s worked out great for me so far.

The only reason I’ve given this 4 instead of 5 stars is that I’ve found that based on the FAQ listed on the website, I’ve never found a way to get coconut oil to work correctly with this mix. I’ve tried melting it and mixing it in, but once you refrigerate your mixture, the coconut oil clumps right back up and will be in solid chunks when you attempt to drink it the next day. I’d highly recommend sticking with an oil that’s liquid at room temperature. My other issue is, with this mixture at least, it always separates after a few hours of sitting around. The other blend I’ve tried (Timothy Fuel) does not seem to do so. It doesn’t change the taste at all and a quick shake fixes that right up, but if you’re sipping on your bottle over an hour, you’re going to have to shake, shake, shake unless you want to have a super thick soup at the bottom of your bottle.

Despite those two shortcomings, I’m about to place another order! The convenience is great, axcho is awesome about answering any questions I’ve had, and the Schmoylent I’ve ordered keeps me full all day and has aided me in the beginning of my weight loss. The convenience is great.

If you’re wondering about the taste of the plain mixture, it does taste a lot like pancake batter and smells very similar. It’s not at all sweet, but that works well for me as I like to add different flavors in daily (cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate powder, some stevia, or a little honey are my favorites).

    • axcho

Hi Kimberly, the reason that the coconut oil does not stay mixed and the mixture separates after a few hours is that the Plain version lacks xanthan gum, an emulsifier, in addition to being unsweetened. Some people just want the nutrients, without any additives for taste or texture. The other flavors do not have this problem.

My friend let me have one of his soylent pouches and I really enjoyed it but my soylent order was a few months out so I purchased schmoylent vanilla to fill the gap. I did not like the taste at all, and it has much more chalky consistency when compared to soylent. It also left my stomach in pain after a days consumption. I could not stomach more than 1.5 days worth of the stuff.

  9. Gabriel (verified owner)

I love the taste, love the idea, seems like an amazing product. However, Stevia doesn’t seem to agree with me—I hadn’t tried it before buying this, so I didn’t know. Fortunately, Axcho was a true gentleman about handling the situation. Within hours of contacting him, Axcho offered me a partial refund, and correspondence could not have been smoother!

Stevia is an organic sweetner and, looking into it, allergies are extremely rare. It will 99.999% probably be OK for you. Guess I just got extremely unlucky! Fortunately for you, my interaction can provide a testament to the legitimacy of the transaction. I was a little nervous buying from this site (it’s a little shady looking!) but my experience could not have been more friendly and understanding, despite my terrible luck with the sweetner. I will definitely consider Schmoylent unsweetened next time I can wrangle up the cash!

I ordered the schmoylent vanilla and the people fuel plus, and I prefer the taste and the belly-feel of the people fuel plus. I just feel like I’ve “eaten” more after I drink the people fuel plus.
but schmoylent vanilla is still quite good!
it’s just not as “hearty” as the other.
but the taste is pleasant and it’s easy to drink.

Ordered Schmoylent to replace my Soylent 1.1 which I ordered in MAY and arrived in OCTOBER! Was satisfied with Soylent but not the shippnig, and viola, my Schmoylent arrives to LA within 3 days of ordering. WOW!

Just tore it open and made a round to try it, even without letting it sit and cool it is much tastier than soylent.

I can taste the stevia and prefer the sucralose, and will make that modification next time, but couldn’t be happier with it.

Blows soylent out of the water on every front.

  12. bob reiger

soylent just isn’t for me. this did not go down well. tried it several times, i imagine an unknown allergy is to blame.

  13. John (verified owner)

My initial taste of Schmoylent was unpleasant. That says more about my diet before than it does about Schmoylent’s taste, however. Prior to Schmoylent, I subsisted on a steady diet of fast food/processed food. I was determined to make the change to Schmoylent, so I flavored it with some sugar-free chocolate syrup, which was good. I have also added cinnamon to Schmoylent, and that alone is enough to really change the taste. Sugar-free maple syrup also proved to be a successful flavor additive, and syrup plus cinnamon was enjoyable as well.

At this point, it seems my tastebuds have adjusted. I now have no problem drinking plain Schmoylent, and it even has a sweet taste to me. I do still add chocolate syrup or cinnamon when I feel like changing it up, though after drinking plain Schmoylent for a couple of days, I don’t have to use as much chocolate syrup or cinnamon as I did at the beginning.

Since I’ve been drinking Schmoylent, I have lost weight. It makes keeping track of the calories I consume incredibly simple. I’ve noticed my complexion is better, and I would say I do feel more alert and energetic. However, considering the state of my diet beforehand, that’s not much of a surprise.

If you are someone who is like me (read: overweight, living on fast food, and looking for a simple and relatively cheap way to restrict calories while obtaining optimal nutrition), then I recommend Schmoylent highly.

Currently, I have about 10 days left of my one month supply. I have a month’s supply of Soylent that should be arriving in the next 30 days. Once I’ve tried it, I’ll be deciding what direction to take in my own personal liquid food journey, but I can say without a doubt that Schmoylent has been a great start. Thanks Axcho!

  14. Jae

Good taste. I sometimes add less water and just have it as a sort of porridge.

I added coconut oil because I think it’s healthier.

I usually use it as a meal replacement because I don’t have time to cook/don’t feel like bring lunch and don’t want to pay for pre-made lunches.

I’m glad I got the Schmoylent, although the turn-around time was two weeks longer than the website suggested. The shipping was very fast, but just to get the stuff in the mail and complete the order was a long time.

Soylent 1.0 arrived while I was still enjoying Schmoylent 1.0. I have a glass of each before me to write you a review. That’s tough. Neither one is “better.” There are small differences, and folks online want to know, so…

Side by side they are VERY close. Tasted an hour apart, I doubt I’d notice any differences. It’s that close. The vanilla-cake tastes are just fine alone, but remember that they are also a perfect platform for “frosting” with other flavors.

Both have such fine “texture” that they can be “chugged” like beer if you are in a big damn hurry. Probably a bad idea, there may digestion/absorption issues in your tummy, but your mouth and throat will probably go for it. Mine did. I think I tried it because Axcho’s People Food Plus was decidedly too thick to chug and this was noted by another reviewer somewhere. I don’t see any reason to do that again, but YMMV.
The small bit of texture encourages a bit of chewing, which brings saliva and that has to be good for digestion / absorption.

Both have about the same “sweet.” Soylent has a bit less sweet but gives you most of its sweet right away, Schmoylent saves some sweet for the aftertaste. I’ve read that both will be cutting back on sweet. That’s fine with me in theory and if it doesn’t work so well in practice at your house, a little sweet is easy to add from those ubiquitous packages made for sweetening tea and coffee. Or you can just ad $0.02 worth of sugar or honey. I expect both to be just fine after the tweak, but again, YMMV.

Both have a faint hint of cinnamon. This plays very well with some extra cinnamon as “frosting.” Again, Soylent gives it to you all at once, Schmoylent has a bit more in the aftertaste.

In summary, Soylent 1.0 has a little more delicate texture with all flavors up front, where Schmoylent 1.0 gives you a slightly longer lasting aftertaste of the sweet and cinnamon notes. These and other differences are very slight. I enjoy both enough to plan on buying both, all things including availability being what they are today.

So, today marks the end of my first week on Schmoylent. I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised. I’ve felt satisfied, I’ve kept up the daily prep, and I have had no immediate bad after effects. I originally ordered a two week supply, thinking that if I liked it, I would have time to order more. So not only will I be ordering, my hubby wants to give it a try. Yay!

If my scale at home can be believed – and I don’t think it is always reliable – I’m down three pounds this week. Usually, the first week of any “diet” you lose water weight, and I know I’m not drinking enough water. But still, that’s encouraging.

What’s probably more encouraging is that I have had only one soda this week, only one small bowl of ice cream, and when I did seek out regular food, it was in limited quantities and not sugary. So, yeah me.

Now, if hubby is joining me, does anyone know where I can get a 12 cup blender? Doubling the nightly prep time for hubby’s drink doesn’t excite me, but he did say he’d help.

Just placed my follow on order for Schmoylent and I’d like to second a previous post. I hope Alex doesn’t stop making this blend. I realize that probably isn’t realistic but… in short, my review on this product (regular custom body fuel) is better than I had hoped. The taste was something I had dreaded after experimenting with a few DIY recipes and some over the counter products (ex., one from Sprouts was awful!) but I couldn’t be happier. I actually look forward to my CBF meals.

I still have a shipment of “official” Soylent coming and will give it a try. But I find it hard to believe that it could be any better than my experience with Schmoylent. Have and will continue to gladly recommend to friends/family.

My first week on Schmoylent and my last day on Official Soylent.
    Quick Summary:
Schmoylent taste has a slight Oat-y non-vanilla, quite tasty but bland, neutral taste and the satisfied feeling after each meal. Schmoylent is very convenient with little clean up at night which I appreciate the best. Using the blender gave me better results than shaking which gives me clumps and a gritty taste, while blending eliminate all of that to a smooth batter texture. I used more water than directed to get a lighter than thick texture which works out great in my 24 oz thermos.

No mustard gas, no headache, no bloating, no cravings, noticeable consistent energy, and finally on a great sleeping schedule. On the 4th day I had some pizza and I was hungry and irritable, no energy, felt sluggish, and wanted to take a nap. I should have something more healthier than grease. I finally understand how food effect your mental, and physical being throughout your daily life. I couldnt wait to get back on Schmoylent to feel great again. I am currently 100% on Schmoylent and enjoy the simplistic of my nutritional daily needs.
*I am taking krill oil supplements for my omega 3-6-9.

Now, on the 7th day I was lucky enough to taste a day worth of official Soylent from a forum member and there is a huge difference between Soylent and Schmoylent. The texture is smoother and the taste is more malt-like and very chalky which I wasnt expecting. The pro: a slight sweet flavor. The con: have to add salt, the chalky taste, do not feel quite satisfied with each meal, energy level is non- existent, mustard gas is horrific for any women to experience..hehe. I did notice a separation in oil in the morning whereas I dont have separation with Schmoylent.

Today I ended my subscription with official Soylent and crossing my fingers that Axcho will never stop doing diy for those who chooses a more custom fit than one size fit all. I am currently looking for a less carb option for weight loss (Phill’s Fuel) is my next try, but Schmoylent has me for life. Thanks Axcho for the fast and really great customer service, look forward to continuing business with you.

So I’ve been living on Schmoylent for approximately 50%-60% of my diet for the past few weeks. I had the original Schmoylent, as well as the current revision (with the improved rice protein). This review is for the new version. I also have a week’s worth of official Soylent thanks to a generous Soylent Discourse poster, so I was able to do a direct comparison.

My first impression of Schmoylent was actually terrible. No, it wasn’t the taste nor the graininess. On my first day of drinking Schmoylent, my stomach was queasy and I felt nauseous. After having Schmoylent for lunch, I actually begun to feel a gag reflex just by thinking about drinking it again.

As you can see by my five stars, this fortunately did not persist. The gag reflex was gone by the next morning, and I decided to give it one more shot. Thankfully, the queasy feeling was gone, and it was actually pretty good. I had no serious side effects — there was barely any gas at all (but I should warn you — the little gas you get smells like something crawled up and died in there. The “mustard gas” is infamous for good reason. Be prepared (or at least warn your loved ones :D)).

Your takeaway from this is that you should give Schmoylent a chance even if your first day didn’t go as expected. It’s just your body adjusting.

Moving on… the taste is actually pretty decent — I grew to like it. The taste of the new version was improved over the old — there was less of a sweet aftertaste. I still wouldn’t exactly call it vanilla, though. As a direct comparison to official Soylent, let’s just say they say it’s ‘inspired’ by Soylent for a reason — it’s not the same :) Official Soylent is much smoother, much less grainy and much more definitely vanilla. But Schmoylent has a more ‘mellow’ sweetness to it.

But with cinnamon, Schmoylent is shockingly transformed. It’s actually pretty doggone delicious. Trust me, give it a try. Yes, cinnamon.

I’m not going to say it has done miracles to my body — I didn’t suddenly have Energizer Bunny energy, my skin didn’t suddenly clear and qualify me for modeling for men’s magazines. I just feel… normal. This is a meal replacement, and I didn’t see any ill effects by doing so, so it accomplishes its purpose in my eyes.

Coming from a repeat customer, axcho and friends does a fantastic job shipping those powders out and interacting with customers. Fantastic customer service, and fantastic people.

Five stars, will eat again! :)

Just got it yesterday. I really like it. After I let it settle, it basically tasted like a pancake milkshake. I’m planning on using this product during lunch. The only drawback for me would be drinking this too fast. Other than that, I have a feeling of being pretty full and I do not want to consume anything until my next meal.

  21. Ryan (verified owner)

Fantastic so far. Typically using it for 2 meals a day for the past week with no issues, going to order more now. Shipping was quick, axcho is on it.

  22. qgroff (verified owner)

You can see axcho’s blog post for links to my exhaustive detailed experiences, but this short version: this stuff is fantastic. The taste is sweet and vanilla-y, the texture is slightly gritty but entirely manageable. It takes other flavors well too (cocoa powder makes it amazing, imo).

I have yet to receive my official Soylent so I can’t make any comparisons with “the real thing,” but I’m quite happy with Schmoylent so far and will likely keep ordering it for my ~30% weekly use until my Soylent order does arrive–and possibly afterwards, depending on how the experience goes, how long axcho decides to keep selling, and whether or not I decide to DIY rather than keep going with the convenience factor.

Oh, and my order was less than 2 weeks from placing it to having it in my hands. I hear it has even been less than half that at times. Though you shouldn’t necessarily *expect* that kind of speed, it sure is nice if it happens!

  23. Jeremy (verified owner)

I just tried my first portion of Schmoylent today. It was surprisingly delicious. I made it using 1 cup of powder, 2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon of flax oil. I put 1 1/2 cups of water in the blender on low setting, added the powder across 10 seconds or so, added the rest of the water, and threw it in the fridge for 3 hours. Came out without any clumps whatsoever. There was a bit of sediment on the bottom of the cup, but a quick stir with a spoon got it mixed back up. I could have shaken it before drinking as well. The stevia used as a sweetener works really well with the ingredients.

  24. Dan (verified owner)

I’m a 5′ 10″, 175 pound male with an athletic build. I’ve never really had any love for food. So far I’ve consumed 14000 calories worth of Schmoylent.

I have experienced no change in general well-being, energy, hunger or intestinal discomfort (this is a GOOD thing). I was able to continue lifting weights and function normally physically and mentally.

The taste reminds me of oatmeal combined with pancake batter, which is definitely not a bad thing. I don’t have to force it down, which is saying something considering I absolutely hate most protein powders (vanilla, chocolate or otherwise). After two days I actually began to look forward to the taste and texture.

500 calories of Schmoylent feels equivalent or somewhat more filling that 500 calories of regular food. I felt no hunger between meals. I had no craving for regular food and when I did eat regular food it tasted pretty much the same as it did before (and given my personality I don’t see this changing).

It’s pretty awesome being able to prepare 2000 calories worth of balanced food in less than five minutes. I wake up and it’s waiting for me in the fridge… quite nice.

  25. Kane (verified owner)

I’ve just finished my first week of Schmoylent and I have to say, it has been a huge success for me. While I cannot do purely Schmoylent (the 2100 calorie intake is not enough for someone my size, even when trying to lose weight) I do use a full day every day, and just supplement an additional 500 calories. I generally eat purely Schmoylent for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with small snacks between to meet my Daily Caloric Intake requirements.

The flavor is sort of a vanilla oatmeal flavor, which I enjoy immensely, and the while I find the consistency a bit hard to describe, I do recommend using 6 cups of water for the one day bag, followed up with a glass of water to help wash down the particulates.

Overall I am very satisfied, and will be ordering a months worth as soon as I get paid, and look forward to trying People Fuel (or chow?) Plus.

  26. tomatobasil (verified owner)

I’ve been drinking Schmoylent the past couple of days. Ive enjoyed the quick, easy prep and I haven’t experienced any of the side effects official Soylent users have discussed.

Preparation is easy and fast. The powder dissolves in water quickly and clumps disappear with either a bit of whisking or a quick shake in an airtight pitcher (Takeya pitchers work perfectly). I leave the Schmoylent overnight before adding the oil to help the powder absorb the water. Either way the Schmoylent tends not to separate, and there isn’t any sediment at the bottom of the pitcher after sitting for several hours. A quick swirl before serving is advisable just in case, but it isn’t usually necessary. Cleanup is quick as the Schmoylent washes away with little effort.

Schmoylent has a pleasant mild vanilla flavor over an oaty, almost rice pudding flavor in the background. Its slightly sweet, but not overpowering. Comparisons to pancake batter come to mind, though it’s more subtle. I find the flavor is neutral enough that drinking a couple liters of it over the course of a day isn’t a problem at all and is enjoyable.

The texture immediately after preparation is gritty but definitely still drinkable. After a night chilling in the fridge the Schmoylent becomes much more smooth and pleasant. The initial grittiness is replaced by a softer mouth feel (it does not go away entirely). The texture and flavor together give the Schmoylent a satisfying quality that make it feel more substantial than a simple drink. It goes down easy and I look forward to meals that I previously disliked (I’m looking at you, breakfast).
